Dramatherapy in Education

The effectiveness of dramatherapy in schools and special education has now been widely recognised and published. Its creative capacity allows opportunities for communication and the expression of emotions and feelings around personal, social or health education issues.

The dramatherapist in schools will work as part of a team to best meet the assessed needs of individuals or groups. Referrals will come from teachers, SENCOs, school nurses, counsellors, head teachers or educational psychologists.

The dramatherapist works with a range of issues including:

  • Developing social skills
  • Exploring conflict situations e.g. bullying
  • Easing transitions
  • Promoting developmental work

Individual or group sessions help to meet a range of needs, including:

  •  With children who are withdrawn, anxious or isolated
  • With young people who have become disaffective or disruptive
  • With children who haved suffered bereavement or difficult family circumstances
  • With young people who have a sensory or physical disability

Length and focus of the therapeutic intervention will be discussed and agreed in consultation with the concerned staff members, parents, carers and pupils.

Individual sessions will normally last 50 minutes. Group sessions will normally last 90 minutes.

The dramatherapist can also work in collaboration with teachers and parents or carers to improve relationships in schools.
